SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The project exposes the student to iconic cities with notable architecture, the architects whom contributed to the city’s landscape and the context of the city exhibiting its global existence. Using an iconic building or architect as a central influence, students select a city that incorporates a rich architectural presence. Students delve into the city’s history, culture, demographics, and economic center in addition to selecting two buildings and a green space. These noted architectural examples are inked and color rendered to illustrate realism and relational environment. In the last phase of the project, students consider the architectural framework to reflect the attributes, qualities and characteristics of the city by designing a travel poster. This graphic exercise is a culmination of the students’ ink and color rendering reflecting their selected pieces of architecture.
STUDENT'S STATEMENT
The bustling city of Rio de Janeiro has been one of Brazil’s most popular and frequented tourist destinations for decades. Its vibrant city center is bursting with culture and pulsating with a deep sense of history and heritage. Rio, as it is commonly known, is the second largest city in Brazil and the third largest metropolis in South America. It is the most visited city in the Southern Hemisphere, making for an impressive, memorable attraction for visitors from all over the world. The project was to hand rendered images of two buildings and a green space within the city. The Municipal Theater of Rio located in the city center and overlooking the spacious Cinelândia Squareis a notable tourist attraction known for its historical and artistic imagery. Inspired by the Opera of Charles Garmer, it is designed in an electric style. The outside walls are inscribed with the names of classic Eurocentric & Brazilian artists. . Parque Lage is a public park featuring one of the most spectacular mansions in the city. Built in the 1920s, it now serves as a home for one of Rio´s premier art colleges. Along with a swimming pool and a coffee shop, the building is set against the unforgettable backdrop of Corcovado mountain and Christ Statue. The Botanical Garden of Rio, a green space which emphasizes the beauty of the nature, showcases the diversity of Brazilian and foreign flora with over 6,500 species distributed throughout an area of 54 hectares. Overall, the ink rendering was completed by using the methods of stippling, crosshatching, and scrumbling. Once completed, the images were transferred to Strathmore paper. The color rendering used techniques of Prismacolor marker overlay alongside with color pencils to create texture, shadow and reflection.
