SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The project exposes the student to iconic cities with notable architecture, the architects whom contributed to the city’s landscape and the context of the city exhibiting its global existence. Using an iconic building or architect as a central influence, students select a city that incorporates a rich architectural presence. Students delve into the city’s history, culture, demographics, and economic center in addition to selecting two buildings and a green space. These noted architectural examples are inked and color rendered to illustrate realism and relational environment. In the last phase of the project, students consider the architectural framework to reflect the attributes, qualities and characteristics of the city by designing a travel poster. This graphic exercise is a culmination of the students’ ink and color rendering reflecting their selected pieces of architecture.
STUDENT'S STATEMENT
Istanbul is a city rich with culture and heritage, having served as a capital under four different empires - Roman, Byzantine, Latin and Ottoman. Each of these Empires has contributed to the underlying culture and history that drives the city today. Built over the former capital of two great empires, visitors are likely to be impressed by the juxtaposition of old and new. Hagia Sophia, a former Greek Orthodox Christian patriarchal basilica, later an imperial mosque, and now a museum, serves as an inspiration to represent the old face of Istanbul. Throughout its existence, the building damage has been repaired many times. The current architectural design reveals the reconstructions and additions conforming to the empire that it once served. Although the old architecture takes a significant place in Istanbul, modern architecture is developing significance. Turkish architects contribute their work in improving the city’s image and environment. Today, Tema Istanbul Showroom demonstrates a high level of skill and imagination of Turkish architecture. It is a multi-purpose construction encased in white elliptical steel ribs. During the day, the central portion of the building appears almost invisible. This is a result of the mirrored façade reflecting its surroundings, while the envelope generates different visual interaction in relation to its context. The Yildiz Park serves as a great example of the city’s green spaces. Originating in the Ottoman era, it is a garden complex showcasing a large variety of flowers from all over the world. The main goal of the assignment is to capture depth, layout, and texture using effective techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching, scumbling, and stippling. The renderings start acquiring more realistic imagery achieved by utilizing these techniques, combining different tools such as color markers, pencils, and pastels. The main focus is to emphasize depth, define shadows, and reveal texture.
