SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The project exposes the student to iconic cities with notable architecture, the architects whom contributed to the city’s landscape and the context of the city exhibiting its global existence. Using an iconic building or architect as a central influence, students select a city that incorporates a rich architectural presence. Students delve into the city’s history, culture, demographics, and economic center in addition to selecting two buildings and a green space. These noted architectural examples are inked and color rendered to illustrate realism and relational environment. In the last phase of the project, students consider the architectural framework to reflect the attributes, qualities and characteristics of the city by designing a travel poster. This graphic exercise is a culmination of the students’ ink and color rendering reflecting their selected pieces of architecture.
STUDENT'S STATEMENT
The juxtaposition of historic landmarks with modern architecture within Philadelphia is something that should be celebrated. As the birthplace of American Democracy in 1776, this city is home to some of the most historically significant landmarks in America. The first selected rendering, City Hall, holds tribute to Philadelphia’s founding father, William Penn in it's the breathtaking façade. Students researched the city’s historical significance and architectural movements, highlighting key architectural landmarks important to the city’s story. The class then held a vote selecting Love Park as the green space for the second rendering. As a main tourist attraction, Love Park is a great example of Modern Architecture conveniently located directly across the street from City Hall. The clean lines and bold colors are in stark contrast to the soft, curving details of City Hall. After tracing these two images on Mylar film with Micron pens, different sketching techniques such as stippling, scumbling and cross-hatching were heavily implemented to bring the image to life. Once the ink drawings were complete, they were then transferred onto Bristol paper to apply color. A cool grey wash using Prismacolor markers was first laid to help establish a solid base color. Building upon this base added depth using Prismacolor pencils best depicting the colors illustrated from the digital image. Many different color combinations were used to achieve a realistic imagery. Once the buildings and green space were complete, the sky took form. Using shavings from soft pastels, different blue hues mixed to represent afternoon light softly highlighting City Hall. Love Park had a deeper blue sky against the fountain, requiring more indigo and soft purple pastels. Overall, this project presented a challenge to creatively use a multitude of techniques capturing the essence of a city that has played such a noteworthy role to our country’s history.
