SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The student was tasked with the creation of a significant civic center as part of a previous urban redesign of the Baltimore Waterfront. Significant objectives included providing an exterior public plaza, addressing sea level rise concerns, and reconnecting with the principles of the earlier planning exercise.
STUDENT'S STATEMENT
An iconic landmark along the Baltimore harbor, the Institute acts serves as a point of convergence of land, air, and sea.
An earlier re-imagination of the Baltimore Waterfront led to a proposal to convert the mostly defunct warehouses along the Canton piers into distinct mixed-use communities connected by an elevated skywalk. This Harbor Line provides a vibrant pedestrian route above and away from the industrial east while allowing a green ground plane to serve as a natural storm-water filtration system.
The Baltimore Waterfront Institute serves as the flagship building for the Creator Community, a vibrant assortment of handmade craft stores, inventive restaurants + cafes, and urban lofts. It is an outlet for the creative residents, offering private access to maker spaces and education facilities. It also welcomes visitors travelling the Harbor Line to proceed through the museum down to a large exterior plaza overlooking a lively dock and the waterfront beyond.
The distinctive form plays on the juxtaposing notions of sinking and soaring, a fitting tribute to the institute's function as a conduit between land, air, and sea. It also take precedence from local landmarks, meshing the prows of the National Aquarium with the long, varying angled roof of the nearby General Shipping Corporation to form a folded jewel that funnels rainwater down into interior cisterns.
