SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
“The World’s Greatest Cities”
This project was designed to expose the student to notable cities, the architects and their work within them, while developing the student’s ink rendering, coloring and presentation skills. Students selected, at their discretion (with the approval of the instructor), building plans, sections, details, outdoor spaces or any graphic deemed necessary to best convey the essence or character of their chosen city. Students were asked to hand render the selected building(s) in ink and color and compose a graphic composition highlighting the chosen projects, with a focus on form, shadow, materiality, scale and style.
STUDENT'S STATEMENT
In effort to focus on an area of interest, a city that was known for its Art Deco architecture was selected, having famous structures representing the time period between the 1920’s and 1940’s. Los Angeles is one of those great cities, as it’s downtown boasts an extraordinary collection of Art Deco buildings, due to a building boom during the heyday of this architectural style. Of particular interest was the Sunset Tower building, designed in 1929 by architect Leland A. Bryant, being a fine example of Streamline, or Zigzag Moderne form. It is decorated with a stepped high-rise exterior, plaster friezes of plants, animals, mythological creatures and Adam and Eve, as well as chevron-patterned, opaque glass breaking up curved corners of floor-to-ceiling windows. An interior detail perspective from inside the Pantages Theatre was also selected to emphasize the shapes, rare materials, and stylistic motifs typical to the era. Suitable to its location, the extreme detail within the Pantages Theatre interior brings the Art Deco style forth as a theatrical production. Hand rendering these buildings, in plan and perspective, allowed a thorough and up close study of Art Deco architecture, resulting in familiarity with the design elements, symbols and color palette used to the express the style during that movement.
