SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Within this home is a story about its owner, Craig Vander Kolk. Craig grew up playing on the shores of Lake Michigan where he feels fortunate to have forged life long memories with his family. As Craig grew older, he pursued a passion he had for helping others attending medical school and becoming a physician where he lived around the world through fellowship and nonprofits medical programs. After many years of traveling Craig returned home to the states. Now practicing and sharing his experience in the Baltimore-Washington Corridor, Craig began looking for a new place to call home. A long search for the right property helped him realize that his sense of home would always be on the water. Once again, Craig wanted to make this connection, and return to the environment he loved as a child to create new memories with his own children and grandchildren. Craig and his wife found an opportunity when they visited a parcel of waterfront property nestled within the eastern shore of South River in Annapolis, Maryland. An existing uninhabitable home would need to be demolished to start the project. Not long after purchasing the land, Craig enrolled in an architectural design course at the local college. As a lover of architecture he wanted to learn as much as possible about creating a home that would balance his admiration for design as well as engage the surrounding landscape. Craig was an active participant, discussing architecture and design with the Professor long after class was over. Eventually, their shared passion for architecture developed into a friendship and partnership. The Professor, a practicing architect, joined with Craig to help him create his dream home. This project is the culmination of a five-year relationship between client and architect in a collaborative environment of sharing concepts and testing ideas. This design process evolved continuously around potentials of site, program, and architecture within the context of their inherent qualities and interconnectedness to each other. Within the synthesis of this framework, a generative range of solutions was considered at each stage in the design process. In this work, the initial impetus for architecture is situated between considerations of site and program. Quantitative and qualitative design criteria converge to allow the emergence of strategies related to space, form, and and overall composition while not diminishing original ideas about site and program. Generative iterations depend on an open system of processing design information so that not one procedure is favored, but rather design content is considered within an approach that seeks to represent site, program, and architecture equally. In each step of the design process, visualized outcomes provide feedback loops for the critique of ideas at hand as well as criteria for further study. Multiple forms of media representation provide filters to considered the output both from rational and empirical vantage points. Ultimately, the cyclical method of research and discovery creates a provocative environment for the design process to yield potential solutions within the learned context of the project.
