SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
The new Naylor Building for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math establishes the western edge of a new campus quadrangle at the McDonogh School, a coeducational day and boarding school established in 1873. The 41,000 sf building’s program divides the disciplines into two separate wings united by a three-story gallery, which acts as a gateway from new parking on the west side of the building through to the new quad on the level above. Scattered throughout the building are spaces for student collaboration as well as active demonstrations of scientific and mathematical theory, including a Foucault pendulum. The Naylor Building portrays a stylized aesthetic reflective of the historic campus but in a contemporary vocabulary to speak to the programs it houses. Building materials match those used across the campus, including brick and stone facade, slate roofing, and traditional windows, but are expressed differently to give Naylor a distinct identity.
