SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
The first new hospital built in Montgomery County, Maryland, in 35 years, Holy Cross Germantown is also the first hospital constructed on a community college campus. This new Hospital, based on the conceptual plan developed for the CON, is a six-story, 237,000 sf, 93-bed general acute care hospital located on 18.26 acres of Montgomery College’s Germantown campus. The broad design objectives include having the least impact to the existing site and preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding context and landscape while establishing a clear identity and character for the new hospital. The hospital is composed of patient care and support spaces based on an organizational concept that separates the facility into three discrete components: a patient care tower with diagnostic and treatment facilities, a logistics/support wing and a separate central utility plant. Each component has structural, mechanical, and utility systems designed for its own unique functional requirements. The patient care tower is divided into a tripartite design; it has a base, middle and a top. The base is clad with natural stone veneer in ashlar pattern connecting seamlessly to the ground and the garden walls, linking with Germantown traditional history and building material. The middle is clad in ground face masonry units with vertically punched windows to preserve the traditional architectural imagery. The top of the windows are capped by wood tone metal panels that relate to the entry canopies and connect to the trees and natural beauty of the surrounding site. A healing garden reflects the hospital’s mission to heal the body, mind, and spirit, which provides patients and visitors space for quiet, contemplative moments. The integrated planning, design and construction team worked to redefine existing hospital typology in a way that greatly increases economy while addressing critical design criteria. The result is a beautiful and operationally cost-efficient hospital built for a new era of healthcare. Primary planning concepts include locating all key access portals in locations that allow for future expansion. The main internal circulation corridor will serve as the permanent backbone of the hospital, housing major public waiting areas. Transparency and visual access is important for way finding. The use of glass at entry points, connections and patient rooms aid in providing intuitive paths of travel and clarify destinations for all visitors, separation and transparency to create an organized architectural statement and hierarchy. The state-of-the-art hospital uses energy-efficient equipment, environmentally friendly finishes and materials, and, most importantly, will reduce travel times for both patients and employees. The project is designed to achieve a LEED Silver Certification from the USGBC.
