SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
The Gaddy House is a prototype that experimentally demonstrates the way toward making an efficient and healthy dwelling. The owner was committed to designing a small 1800 square foot, very “green” dwelling. As a physicist he wanted to push the efficiency boundaries to a new level—by pursuing three certification programs: LEED for Homes V4, PHIUS Passive House certification and the Living Building Challenge certification. It is currently pending certification levels for all three. The house was designed to be net positive. Since completion it has created more electricity than it has used. It is designed to sustain its occupant's health, benefit the surrounding community and protect the environment as much as possible. The intent is to promote the effective use of land, to use no harmful measures or materials, eliminate the generation of carbon over the life of the project, use only the water available on site, and to have no water runoff. The technical and functional lessons learned on the project provide innovative strategies for sustainable living.
