SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
City Neighbors Hamilton (K-8) and City Neighbors High School are two public charter schools with a focus on Project Based Learning, Arts Integration, and inspired by Reggio Emilia. These two schools serve over 600 Baltimore City students. Nestled in a 5.4 acre site in the Hamilton Community, the $8.9 Million, 132,785 square feet renovation, which spanned six (6) years, required creative collaborative effort and cost effective design solutions to house two progressive public schools with separate entrances and shared community spaces in a former 1931 public middle school building with an adjacent recreation center. “What would it take for every student to be Known, Loved and Inspired?” This design question guided the creation of the schools, and the renovations. The high quality and innovative transformation of the space intentionally evokes a homelike atmosphere, transforming the industrial age design of the building to an exemplary 21st century learning environment that supports collaboration, creativity, and relationships. Through the infusion of glass walls, stages, gallery spaces, and with inviting nooks to classrooms with movable walls and flexible furniture, the physical space is designed to support the unique mission and vision of the schools. Consequently, it leads to a dynamic school culture, impacts teaching and learning, supports social relationships, and boosts collaboration, independence and high academic achievement where every student is “Known, Loved and Inspired.”
