SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
Maryland Institute College of Art is expanding its graduate facilities to include the building at 1801 Falls Road. The former millwork building sits adjacent to the College’s newly renovated Graduate Student Center on North Avenue. Once completed, the two buildings will consolidate much of MICA’s graduate programming in the Station North hub. The project includes major renovation to the 33,000 square foot warehouse building and the addition of a pedestrian bridge connecting the two facilities. The 1801 Falls Road building will house the Rinehart School of Sculpture, and provide additional instructional, exhibition, and studio space for the Illustration, Art Education, and Social Design graduate programs. The new facility will contain state-of-the-art digital labs, workshops, and classrooms, as well as flexible common and informal meeting spaces. A new bridge connection creates continuity between the Graduate Studio Center and 1801 Falls Road, while new monumental skylights and vertical connections bring ample day light into the building, encouraging overlap within the academic community.
