SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
Public libraries are expressive of community culture and values, often with a specific educational mission to support the public schools and local economic development. For Howard County’s Savage Branch & STEM Education Center, the priority is STEM learning for teens in an open, transparent and sustainable environment. A new digital media lab situated in a transparent, energetically-designed space encourages collaboration and interaction. The sustainable facility supports hands-on, active learning through the use of specialized spaces, including classrooms, a lab, and a sound studio for music recording. The facility’s robust technology and digital connectivity (with dedicated “teen booths),” support peer-to-peer teaching and exploration. The library’s cyber cafe provides food and comfortable seating in a relaxed environment. The repurposed and revitalized local library symbolizes community aspirations and reflects a commitment to education from Howard County Library System (2013’s Library System of the Year).
