SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
In 1992, this 350,000 sf, six-level center expanded on the original Hecht’s that store opened in 1947 seeking to revitalize the historic landmark as part of a total downtown redevelopment in Silver Spring, MD. Due to a variety of reasons, the other planned development projects did not come together until many years later in 2007 and for more than a decade the center stood alone unable to generate needed sales. A joint venture of developers reacquired City Place in 2013 and have charged the design team to remake and rebrand the center, now called Ellsworth Place. The design solution preserves the solid mass of the historic Hecht's wing’s Art Deco-inspired exterior, while incorporating bold illuminated signage and opening up the building to the street. New entrances with escalators draw shoppers to retail on multiple levels, feeding directly from the street into the anchors while also easily accessing the specialty stores on the same floors. Through this innovative design approach, the project seeks to increase activity on the street level exterior and interact with the surround district.
