SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

The Nottingham Car Wash is an approximately 11,000sf project located in the Nottingham section of White Marsh, MD. The owners approached SM+P Architects with a basic shell building design, and a few basic requirements: 1. Capture the industrial spirit of Canton, the location of their first car wash, 2. Enhance customer wait-time experience, and 3. “Make it cool!” SM+P was hired to fully design the interior, and consult on the exterior look of the building. All interior public areas- including customer lobby, coffee bar and restrooms- as well as the post-wash detail bay were designed by SM+P. This included the selection of all lighting and furnishings throughout. Custom concrete countertops and rolling steel/wood communal tables & custom steel restroom partitions were designed by SM+P and fabricated locally by Lukeworks and Majer Metalworks, respectively. Re-claimed oak was used to introduce a natural thread and help to lighten the material palate. Hand-painted brick with a custom logo mural dominates the main wall of the Lobby, which looks through steel warehouse-style windows into the Detail Bay beyond. Black corrugated metal panel, ground-face CMU and galvanized standing-seam roofing was selected for the exterior envelope. The dark exterior color palate was used as a counterpoint the bright, white interior.
