SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:

The site for the new residence was very large for the area and location, however the resulting buildable area was very constricted. The constraints of steep slope setbacks, both water side and entry side, along with individual mature tree locations dictated a relatively small linear buildable area at the top of the knoll that was fortunately parallel to the waterside orientation. These site constraints limited the program which was intentionally modest and became the catalyst for a linear spine diagram that was asymmetrically loaded with program elements oriented to the western facing water views. The detached garage, was viewed as an out-building and mimicked the form of the existing Guest House located lower on the site. It was sited to be offset from the house plane to provide the visual and physical terminus of the vehicular approach sequence. The garage along with the breezeway create a semi-enclosed court for parking providing a framed glimpse of the water views. The entry facade was delineated to provide an arrival point utilizing an arbor / port cocher to mark the main entry point to the interior spine and is asymmetrically over-layed with a porch that extends to create a side entry to the mud room / kitchen. The water side facade was delineated in a much different way to maximize the water view and create negative space that protects the interior from the harsh western orientation and creates spaces and terraces that become an extension of the interior spaces. The second floor masses were staggered to maximize the air flow from the summer breezes. As desired by the clients, the house takes its form and development from the site parameters.
