SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT:
The new 18,640-gross square meter U.S. embassy campus in Harare draw inspiration from the traditional culture, climate, and geography of Zimbabwe, articulated in a thoroughly modern way. The embassy will proudly represent the United States of America while taking architectural references from its host country. The facilities will include a chancery, US Marine Corps security guard residence, community facilities, utility building, support annex and warehouse, as well as covered and open parking. Site and perimeter improvements are also planned for the 16-acre site located in the northwestern portion of the city. The design incorporates OBO’s criteria to create a safe, secure, and functional diplomatic platform that represents the US presence in Zimbabwe. The embassy compound will be responsive to the local environment, integrate the grounds and landscape, and provide a superior workplace enhancing productivity. The centrally- important feature of the embassy design is the open-air courtyard around which the chancery is organized. Targeting LEED NC Silver certification, the chancery is comprised of two, bent-bar shaped, three-story office blocks connected at the southern end with a two-story gallery and at the northern end by a single story connector. The east office houses the main and consular entrances, all public access areas and most of the general office program, while the west includes service elements on the lower floor and diplomatic functions on the upper floors.
