SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Green Street Academy (GSA) was founded to inspire students to imagine their careers through the prism of sustainability and to prepare them with marketable skills for their future work life and extended education. Informed by decades of declining high school and college graduation rates in Baltimore City and the changing needs for trained workers, the GSA team designed its academic and career programming to offer hands-on, rigorous STEM curricula in conjunction with project-based learning, emphasizing the collaboration and critical thinking skills required in the modern workplace and reinforced with internships, apprenticeships and part-time employment. A move from the old location to Hilton Street enables GSA to realize its vision of integrating student learning and community impact by providing state-of-the-art technology and science labs, expanded academic and health services, green space for environmental studies, athletics, and adult workforce training. In September 2015, Hilton Street was transformed. From near abandonment to a community anchor, the new school is filled with students and families who believe in the promise and potential of Green Street Academy. Green Street Academy has more than just a new school building – it is a state- of-the-art, sustainable building showcasing the best of education in Baltimore City. At the new building, Green Street Academy will be able to fulfill a goal the founders had at its inception: creating a community center that is open to families and the surrounding community. While we focus on career education for students during the school day, their families can do the same during off-hours – eventually offering a full adult training site, directly connected with local employers.
