SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
A 1100 square foot suburban rambler shares a lot line with six neighbors. Four of the six are recently constructed, over-sized speculative homes. The result is the loss of the owner's privacy and backyard gardens. The owners wished to add a new kitchen, master bedroom, and design space within their limited budget.
The architect proposed a defensive design strategy to help reclaim the owner's lost privacy. The house was completely renovated and a new addition was conceived as a series of conventional forms (shed roof, saddlebag, and a kitchen bump-out) that shields the owners from unwanted views. The peaks of the one story sheds are oriented to minimize views from neighboring second floor windows, simultaneously creating a semi-private courtyard. The courtyard brings abundant sunlight into the adjoining spaces, and a glassed wall between the house and courtyard gives occupants a sense of larger interior volumes.
The project is 1881 square feet.
