SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Editing away subsequent inconsistent trim imposed on a 1920s Tudor reveals the original simple palate of black metal and white plaster; Defining the inherent character of the home and informing a breakfast/kitchen addition. Like the existing, the addition’s simple, white untrimmed walls are a backdrop for black metal architectural elements such as island shelving and steel I-beams with exposed bolting. Ceiling angles of the existing home are recalled at the addition; Both on the interior and outside. Paired dormers overhead offer the reshuffled master bedroom suite views across the addition’s two-story chiseled ceiling to trees and sky. An existing den and workspace peripheral to the addition employ a new laundry, back kitchen and butler’s pantry. At the pantry, a surprise concrete floor cavity found during construction lead to the discovery of bomb shelter. The location of the wine room, an original program request is reconsidered and reallocated through the concrete cavity by a stairway to the bunker. Ceiling, walls and even wall construction are left exposed behind floating metal wine racks recalling its earlier purpose. Make wine not war.
JURY COMMENTS (If applicable)
We appreciated the contextual form, roof and scale of the project relative to the existing home. This was a thoughtful addition. There is a consistency of quality and level of design inside and out. It is beautifully detailed.
