SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
This classical revival house on West Kirke Street was built c. 1891 and is a contributing resource in the Chevy Chase Village historic district. As the Montgomery County Historic staff report described, it had “an eclectic assortment of classical stylistic details” with a quirky exterior and interior character, including one very unfortunate non-historic rear addition that you can see in the “before” pictures.
The house was purchased in 2014 by contractor Richard Zantzinger & his wife Amy, an interior designer, who fell in love with its character and great bones and intended to renovate the house for their own use. They hired Barnes Vanze to help them bring it gracefully into the 21st century, with the primary change being to remove that existing rear addition and replace it with one of a similar size but much more in keeping with the historic architecture. This rebuilding of the rear addition, along with the surgical insertion of a new interior back stair, provided a new larger eat-in kitchen with master suite above and an expanded basement below. There was also on overall freshening up of the entire interior.
A few months into the project, the Zantzingers had to change their plans and were delighted to find a willing new owner in a former client and friend of both theirs and ours. The Graham family, for whom we had jointly expanded and renovated a home a couple of miles away 10 years before, enthusiastically jumped at the chance to move to this beautiful old world neighborhood. Besides the charm of this house, it was bigger than their last house and conveniently closer to work for Dean and the schools and the social activities of the children.
This renovation project was a delightful challenge, with the finished house maintaining what we all loved about the original but with a new lighter, brighter, and modern sensibility.
