SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The goal for this existing suburban home was to “break open the box” to allow views of the surrounding wooded landscape. Interconnected spaces were created where previously there were walls dividing them.
A collage of materials and textures ties together the new spaces into one cohesive composition.
The main entrance is on axis of the new fireplace, framed by large glass panels that provide views of the landscape beyond. The staircase is light and transparent, so as not to interrupt this view. A new double-height family room unifies the house both literally and figuratively. A wood wall of custom stained ash wraps around the kitchen and library, creating a cross-axis and seamlessly joining adjacent rooms. The continuous black ceiling frames the spaces, creating a horizontal datum through the first floor. The family room’s Macassar Ebony storage wall and viroc clad chimney serve as vertical focal points within the composition while adding warmth and texture at the heart of the home.
JURY COMMENTS (If applicable)
This was a great stitch into the existing home rendered into three-dimensional space. Very abstract with the dark ceiling and red accent door. It was very bold but at the same time restrained in nature. The detailing was superb.
