SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The owners of this early-1960s residence grew weary of the kitchen and dining room of their "Brady Bunch" house in a pleasant neighborhood just inside the Capital Beltway in Bethesda, Maryland. Like many houses of that era, the kitchen and dining room were distinctly separate spaces and felt small, confined and disconnected. Moreover, the divided spaces limited how these avid art collectors could display their ceramic and print collections.
The design solution removes the shared wall, expanding the perceived space of both areas, while retaining a subtle division with custom cabinetry that is both part of the kitchen island and a display cabinet/screen wall. The owners’ collection of various ceramic objects can now be appreciated from both the kitchen side and the dining room side. An adjacent exterior wall of the dining room is reserved for their growing collection of etchings by Japanese artist Tanaka Ryohei. The opening between the dining room and the foyer has been expanded to allow for a more expansive view of the renovated space and the art collections upon entering the house.
Material selections include custom maple-veneered cabinetry (using waterborne VOC-free adhesives), low-iron content Starphire glass, natural and quartz composite slabs for countertops and backsplashes, LED lighting, energy-efficient appliances, engineered wide-plank oak flooring stained grey to match floor tiles at the foyer, and a soothing palette of neutral colors.
