SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Located in Chevy Chase, Maryland this project is largely fabricated on the foundations of a house and connected carport originally constructed in 1948. The scheme was built in phases, allowing the owner / builder to occupy a portion of the project while undertaking the balance of work. The geometry of the new house was largely informed by the pre-existing relationship of the house and carport. A new structure utilizes the foundation of the existing carport and extends this volume to accommodate a garage and living space on the main floor and a future rental unit on the second floor. This volume was completed first and occupied prior to construction of the main structure.
Phase 2 Work utilizes the foundation, basement and first floor of the original house. The basement and first floor spaces are reconfigured, a small addition is incorporated, and a second floor is added. In the final phase, a one-story glass entry space connects the garage volume to the main house. The tension between the two volumes, initially established with the existing geometry is magnified by a dichotomy of materials employed at each; one with white stucco and the other with dark ground faced block.
Interior spaces are open, and light filled with minimal detailing and a subdued material palette.
A series of outdoor spaces are terraced and engage the gently sloping topography with mature trees. Interior spaces are arranged to optimize views toward the landscape while minimizing views of the neighboring houses.
