SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The Hyde Addison Elementary School project represents a campus modernization to current DCPS standards in an historic urban neighborhood. It involved the renovation of a 70,000 SF existing historic facility and an addition of almost 30,000 square feet of new space to the complex. The addition blends perfectly into historic Georgetown, while standing out as a distinguished contemporary building on its own. It contains a gymnasium with a basketball court, stage/bleacher seating, as well as a music room, health suite, library, cafeteria, offices and 4 new classrooms. The design aimed to reuse the two existing buildings and concentrate the entrance into one place. It is laid out to maintain connection between P St. and O St. The architects utilized a modern terracotta rain screen and sunscreen baguette systems, installed vertically, challenging the common horizontal use of terracotta screens. Energy consumption has been reduced using ceramic frit glass. The design integrated the bio-retention area with the landscape and maximized the amount of green roof on the building. A holistic approach was taken to the architectural design, site design, landscaping, and stormwater features. The landscaping is inviting and provokes comfort and happiness. All of these features are integrated for a cohesive plan. The two existing structures were refurbished with modern water fixtures which has lowered water usage. Lighting was another feature that was enhanced. The design allows for natural light to come in without glare while filtering it to reduce solar heat gain. Natural light continues to below-grade spaces through the use of skylights and glass floor panels.
The project required extensive study of the site, and engagement with the school and community as well as local and national historic preservation bodies. It serves not only the student population, but also the community as it is open on the weekends as well. There is art displayed in the building created by local artists, emphasizing the connection between the school and community. Upon completion of the project, a site visit was scheduled for AIA|DC’s Committee on Architecture for Education, along with DCPS, the project contractor, and operators. Attendees toured the facility and had the opportunity to discuss the project and lessons learned with school leadership and the design team.
JURY COMMENTS (If applicable)
[KY=Kim Yao (Chair) KD=Kimberly Dowdell TY=Takashi Yanai]
KY: This is a very striking project—I like the boldness of the color. The openness of the screen allows for views out and daylight coming to the interior. The terracotta lattice is a nice foil to the calmness in the remainder of the room.
KD: The use of color is bold—hopefully resonating with the students and teachers as they foster a dynamic learning environment in this visually compelling building.
TY: This is an architect's project! The project has a very strong parti, with a nice use of vertically oriented terra cotta on the rainscreen. The treatment of the existing building interiors is also quite nice.
