SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT  

The Lafayette- Pointer Recreation Center is a new 3,330 SF facility located in Lafayette Park, in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, DC, which replaced the existing building. The new structure includes a multi- purpose room with the option to subdivide the space for flexible programming, classroom, kitchenette, office, public restroom facilities accessible from building exterior, service spaces, outdoor terraces, and integrated stormwater management landscaping. The building will be used by the Chevy Chase community, and adjacent Lafayette Elementary School. An
improved stormwater management design for the adjacent park/hill area, as well as site lighting, are included within project scope.
The Center was renamed in honor of the black family that was forced off the site in 1928 to build the Lafayette School and Park. The Design Team was proud to have participated in the memorable ribbon- cutting ceremony which featured descendants of the Pointer family and students from the Lafayette School who had advocated for the name change. The community has welcomed the new facility, as it integrates into the neighborhood while offering a modern perspective.
