SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
A 3-story 14,800 GSF building with a 45-space parking lot. Established in 1880, ODBC has been a fixture in Alexandria for 141 years. This new building will be their third clubhouse on the Alexandria waterfront: their first was on Strand near the foot of Duke Street, and second on King Street. The design of the ODBC is meant to reflect the narrative of a culturally significant institution, architecture, and site. In presenting the project to the Board of Architectural Review for Old Town, Alexandria, we shared our view that the language of the project should not be based on a specific architectural stylistic period but instead should speak to a building that reflects the history of the boat club by using materials and detailing similar to what a boat builder would purpose. The piers and decking at the front of the building illustrates the history of the waterfront dating back to the 1700s. The Beachcombers building is preserved in its original form and dimensions.
