SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT  

The Akwesasne Heritage Center (AHC) is an exciting development that will serve as an icon and center of culture, heritage and educational activities for the entire community. This beautiful facility is being developed by a dedicated working group representing the AHC’s Library, Museum, Tribal THPO and Archive Offices as well as OED’s Cultural Tourism Staff with invited input from local artisans, historical and cultural expertise. The vibrant and rich history, culture, knowledge and continued contributions of the Mohawk people are a valuable priority asset to be protected in the new AHC. Akwesasne today is a vibrant community who are strongly committed to ensuring that our collective history, language and traditions continue to be passed from one generation to the next. Where we learn about our Nation’s culture and history helps us understand who we are and where we come from. Akwesasne has meant many things to many people in its history. As we develop the Akwesasne Heritage Complex, we will have the capacity to develop and share our vibrant culture, history and modern day realities.
