SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Located in one of the hardest hit streets during the 1968 Washington DC riots, the building design incorporates a historic store into its facades by adjusting the massing of the new building to allow the existing retail building to be restored and to allow the historic composition of the block to remain. The new portion of the building completes the block corner which has been a parking lot for 4 decades. The design complements the new architectural fabric formed on 14th Street with blend of historic components of bay windows and the modern forms with floor-to-ceiling windows.
Lumen is designed to incorporate and fit the existing context of the historic fabric of 14th Street and offers a forward looking expression with its new residential architecture on W Street. The retail space occupies the entire south east portion of the First Floor facing 14th Street NW and W Street NW. There are 18 residential apartments including 6 one bedroom units and 11 two bedroom units on the 2nd floor to 5th floor with one penthouse apartment on the 6th floor.
