SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The YMCA of Frederick County approached the team to develop a 62,000 gsf recreation center for the south end of the County. The facility sits between Urbana’s middle and high school, on 22 acres donated by Natelli Communities. The new $25 million dollar facility was completed in April 2021 and immediately became a destination for the surrounding community not only for the activities provided within but also for its contemporary and impactful design.
Upon entering one is welcomed with a double height grand lobby that leads into a wellness center, large gymnasium, indoor walking/running track, inter-generational space for active older adults, family adventure center for kids, group exercise studios, locker rooms, and multi-purpose athletic fields. A skylit, monumental open stair with lounge space benches is provided at the heart of the building for those who want to socialize.
The indoor natatorium features eight wide lanes, a warm-water family/class pool with fun activities for children along with a slide that emanates from a frog’s mouth, spray jets, tumbling buckets and an area for water aerobics and other low water sports.
The second-floor fitness area has abundant natural light from the window lined area providing an expansive view of the outside. An outdoor rooftop terrace provides for those who prefer to work out in open air. Throughout the building whenever possible, the design provides reduced need for artificial light.
Exterior design elements include stacked stone, vertical panels, three tone cement paneling and planks. The orientation of the curtain wall at the front of the building allows exercising members to have a view of the distant mountains.
