SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The new 40,000 sf Hyattsville Branch Library is a welcoming and modern facility to replace the library structure in its original site on the prominent corner of Adelphi and Toledo Roads. The modern public library includes a café, state-of-the-art community meeting rooms, multipurpose/computer technology lab with computers for public use throughout the library, a dedicated children’s area, study rooms, a dedicated young adult collection and study rooms, a drive-thru book drop, and extensive light-filled reading areas. The building integrates numerous sustainable design elements such as photovoltaic solar panels, vegetative roof, light fixtures with LEDs throughout the building, and water conservation features.
Large windows provide views of the outdoors while allowing for natural day lighting and winter solar heating. The parking garage below the building helps reduce impervious areas throughout the site and landscaping provides subtle screening for the garage. The Prince George’s Room is a dedicated room focused on local history and genealogy collection. The children’s area — themed as Discovery Village — incorporates elements of classic children’s literature: a castle wall with a moat and drawbridge, three little pigs’ houses, an enchanted tree, and a yellow brick road with glass floor for displaying collections. The outdoor reading terrace accessed from the main reading room overlooks the Flying Saucer canopy, a community icon preserved and relocated as part of the exciting new design element in a lush garden which is a fitting tribute to the past.
