SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Located in the historic southern Maryland area, this new 49,780 sf Health Science Center for the College of Southern Maryland is a state-of-the-art healthcare education facility centrally located to serve three counties in southeastern Maryland region. The increased demand for health care services due to the aging population coupled with the concurrent aging of both the health care workforce and health educators are resulting in a significant mismatch between the supply and demand of skilled workers. Many young adults looking to enter health care professions leave the area and pursue education and eventually choose to live in other areas. This portion of southern Maryland currently holds federal medically underserved designations; therefore, access to adequate health care resources will have a substantial impact on these populations. Medical treatment facilities have been expanding in this area in recent years. With the construction of this educational facility, the graduating work force of this Health Sciences center is well positioned to become the primary supplier of health care workforce in southern Maryland, which will contribute to the population retention and economy of this area.
This modern education facility provides classrooms and labs for various medical professions, including a state-of-the-art hospital simulation suite, medical lab technician, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, emergency medical services, student success suite, along with private and group study rooms. The building integrates numerous sustainable design elements such as site sensitive storm water management, water conservation features, highly efficient HVAC systems, and lighting controls that adjust as daylighting changes. All light fixtures throughout the building are LEDs. The large class northern façade and windows provide views and connection to the outdoors while allowing for natural daylighting.
