PROJECT SUMMARY
The Joseph Center for Education is a series of interactive spaces dedicated to bringing the museum’s world-class collection to the hands and imaginations of expanded audiences. Dedicated galleries provide flexible and engaging areas for play-oriented exhibits and a public-facing educational workshop space allows visitors a seamless look at contemporary art and curatorial practice. The layout, interactive architectural features, and integrated learning areas are designed to encourage visitors to be a part of art via play.
Interactive galleries form the core of the project, inviting viewers along a multisensory journey of discovery and imagination. The reinvented Wurtzburger Lobby transforms a classical entry into a portal for education and engagement, creating space for gathering and entry into an education studio and dedicated multimedia lab. This project establishes sightlines and community-oriented programming throughout the entire ground floor, uncovers existing architectural features, and uplifts the visitor journey while promoting the museum’s mission by providing a more inclusive experience of art.
The reimagined programmatic elements of the JEC include the following:
The Interactive Education Gallery: an immersive gallery with changing exhibits oriented toward youth and families;
The Media Lab: a flexible classroom for computer-oriented artmaking;
The Wonder Wall: a multifunctional living-archive wall that includes interactive elements as well as display;
The Wurtzburger Entry & Lobby: a reactivated portal for passage and gathering; and
The Studio Classroom: an education space dedicated to “wet” artmaking.
