Summary Description of Project
This project required the designing of a Downtown School of Architecture and Planning located on a site situated at the intersection of Greenmount Avenue and Belvidere Street in Baltimore, Maryland. This interdisciplinary collaborative workspace was supposed to provide the community with affordable design and fabrications services, foster the transition of students from the academic studio to the professional studio and provide a showcase for the talents of the SA+P students and graduates. The design should have directly incorporated the observations made during the program analysis, site analysis or precedent analysis.
Student's Statement
Following a series of program analysis, precedent analysis and site analysis, a parti was designed based on the most significant observations. The structures surrounding the project site serve various functions; ranging from industrial, to educational to residential. However; one common attribute of all of them is that minimal features exist on the exterior for visitors to be able to distinguish what activities take place on the interior. The purpose of this design is to incorporate the characteristic of a hidden interior while simultaneously encouraging visitors to drop in and discover the interior. The entrance of the building is located on the north side of the site facing a factory. The first floor, which contains the public spaces of the program, is clandestine, having minimal openings that barely portray the inside. The private spaces, such as the studio, are located on the second and third floor. To enter, students and visitors leave the public space, at the corner lot, and slide into the structural walks of the building. They slowly descend down a path that leads them to the private courtyard facing the magnificent entry, which reveals what the inside has to offer. This structure engages the visitors by directing them towards a new perspective and generating a lasting experience.
