Summary Description of Project
Students were to select a national park and design an off-the-grid hostel for a national park. The design was to take into account the principles of sustainable design and was to set specific targets based on the LEED rating system and implement them in a way which was very cohesive in the design from the ground up.
Student's Statement
Joshua Tree National Park was selected for its beauty. The trees are some of the most unusual anywhere in the world; it has appearance of a semi-deciduous tree from afar but only upon closer inspection does one come to realize that there is something very different about it. It's lower trunk appears almost as deciduous tree but when its roots are exposed it becomes obvious that it actually has quite a lot in common with palm trees and grasses but then it has a tap root which burrows deep into the earth to reach water reserves below.
As the major elements of the park were closely examined a very important relationship emerged; the one between the Joshua Tree and the Joshua Tree moth. they had formed such a strong bond with each other that they had come to be absolutely dependent on each other for the survival of their respective lineages. We were quite inspired by this and the relationship came to be the major inspiration for the design that ensued.
