Summary Description of Project
To explore contemporary practices of urban redevelopment in order to address the economic, social, and environmental revitalization of the exiting urban environment. By using strategies for increasing density and diversity, we will investigate design possibilities for the generation of economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially vibrant urban communities.
Student's Statement
From thorough site analysis, Perkins Homes was found to be gap in the urban fabric. While being located directly adjacent to the Baltimore harbor, Fells Point, and many other great neighborhoods in Baltimore, Perkins Homes was not designed to take advantage of it’s great location. Rather, it created an isolated and unsafe environment that exists within the neighborhood. In an effort to stitch together a once disconnected patch in the urban fabric, Perkins Place introduces a commercial experience along Caroline St. connecting our site to Harbor Point and the new school. In addition to the core commercial corridor, nestles of dense residential blocks create unique residential neighborhoods that allow alleys to meander through the site, giving residents a comfortable pedestrian experience.
