SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Behavioral health is a topic of paramount importance today. We see its impact both across cultures and across generations. As a society we face the challenges involved with the associated stigma for those needing treatment. Sheppard Pratt has been a national leader in behavioral health care and an impassioned advocate for reducing stigma. Fundamental to their patient success, and the key design driver for this facility, is the belief in the healing power of nature.
The 42 acre site was selected for its array of natural features - forested hills + hollows, creeks + wetlands - as well as its potential for genuine community impact. The built form merges with the land form, occupying the primary hill and utilizing the hollows as an invitation for entry and a means to offer visual connection with the surrounding forest. Two stories transition to three as the grade declines, allowing easy access, daylighting and views on multiple levels.
The design response uses transparency and reflections integrated with the landscape to blur the line between inside and outside. Organic forms and curvilinear lines create a welcoming, non-institutional, aesthetic that promotes a holistic approach to health and healing. Interior courtyards and exterior pathways offer a variety of opportunities for connecting with nature while maintaining patient privacy and safety.
