SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Existing Context + Program:
The Friends of Patterson Park (FoPP) is a Baltimore-based non-profit organization that works in partnership with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks to maintain and promote a positive park image, provide a forum for ensuring community input, increase resources for park programs and projects, foster park stewardship in the community, and develop events and programs that bring the community into the park to learn, recreate, and engage in civic life. Following the Patterson Park Master Plan adopted by Baltimore City in 2016, FoPP embarked on a journey to re-envision the physical presence of the organization within the park with the complete renovation and preservation of the ‘White House’ – a historic structure that served as the park superintendent’s residence for more than a century, now serving as FoPP’s headquarters. The new plans included the addition of a new structure and outdoor space that would help support and expand FoPP’s offerings in the park and provide opportunities for new community programming and volunteer support center. Located at the northwest corner of the park, the new facility serves as an anchor destination for the surrounding neighborhoods and a new gateway to the park.
Solution + Design Intent:
Sited across from the renovated historic White House via a connecting courtyard, the Cedar House is a modest structure comprised of two elements – the Myerhoff Community Commons and The Shed – each accommodating community event and volunteer support programs respectively. The simple gabled structure houses the main gathering space, which offers views towards the park and opens to the covered porch and the courtyard beyond via folding glass doors. This allows the space to be used as a pavilion, offering seamless connection between indoor and outdoor as well as a series of discrete areas. Support spaces are located in the lower portion of the building, which also houses the tools and equipment storage that support FoPP’s volunteer program. The soft textures of the cedar shingles and stained cedar siding complement the surrounding park setting and establish a dialogue with the formal language of the historic masonry structure as a reflection of the park’s past and future. The connecting brick-paved courtyard grounds the new ensemble and ties it to the rest of the park with native plantings and intimate gathering areas.
