SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
As part of the renovation and revitalization of Hillandale Local Park, a new pavilion was included that enhances the park’s role as a recreational and social hub for the community. Located at 10615 New Hampshire Avenue in Hillandale, Maryland, just north of the I-495 Capital Beltway, the 24.5-acre park now features modernized amenities that balance active outdoor engagement with environmental conservation.
The new pavilion serves as a central gathering space, designed to accommodate public and private events, family gatherings, and community activities. The covered picnic shelter includes picnic tables, grills, and nearby restroom facilities. Thoughtfully integrated into the park’s landscape, the pavilion is ADA-accessible, with adjacent accessible parking, ensuring an inclusive space for visitors of all abilities.
The design of the Hillandale Local Park Pavilion embodies a playful and dynamic architectural expression, inspired by the very meaning of "Hill and Dale"—a landscape of rolling hills and valleys. The double-pitched roof reflects this concept, creating a sense of movement and rhythm that echoes the natural undulations of the surrounding park terrain. The design team explored multiple concepts, engaging with community groups throughout the process to ensure the pavilion would be a welcoming and meaningful structure for local residents. Through this collaborative approach, the final design reflects both the identity of Hillandale and the community’s vision.
Beyond its function as a social gathering space, the pavilion is part of a broader effort to enhance the park’s public benefits. The renovation includes a multi-age playground, a log challenge course, lighted basketball courts, tennis courts with pickleball striping, a high-performance athletic field, and an asphalt walking trail, all designed to encourage multi-generational recreation and wellness. The pavilion’s strategic placement within the park fosters seamless connectivity between these amenities, reinforcing Hillandale’s identity as a safe, accessible, and family-friendly destination.
Additionally, the park’s renovation prioritizes environmental stewardship, preserving 13.2 acres of forested, environmentally sensitive land, including a stream buffer and a perennial tributary to the Paint Branch. Sustainable site features, such as stormwater management systems, landscape plantings, and tree preservation efforts, further enhance the ecological resilience of the park.
By combining thoughtful architecture, accessibility, and community-driven design, the new Hillandale Local Park Pavilion provides a modern, welcoming space that enriches the recreational, environmental, and social fabric of the neighborhood. Whether serving as a gathering space, event venue, or outdoor retreat, the pavilion strengthens Hillandale Local Park’s legacy as a vibrant community asset for years to come.
JURY COMMENTS (If applicable)
In its simplicity, the pavilion gifts the community a stage for everyday ritual—picnics, play, gathering—where belonging is practiced in the open air.
