SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The adaptive reuse of the historic Monticello Dairy is the revival of a community landmark located in the 10th & Page neighborhood of Charlottesville, VA. Tracing its roots back to 1912, the Monticello Ice Cream Company began as a one-room ice cream business that grew into a renowned dairy business that supported generations of local dairy farmers and provided Charlottesville residents with milk, butter, ice cream, and other dairy products for over 70 years. The Monticello Dairy was an iconic community gathering space – popular for its ice cream parlor, event space, and festive holiday displays.
Today, the reimagined Monticello Dairy, now named Dairy Market, includes a food hall, office building addition, and functions as an inclusive community resource that champions local small business entrepreneurs and the Virginia farm-to-table culinary industry. This development demonstrates how the re-use of historic structures contributes to the social, economic, and environmental value of our neighborhoods and cities.

From equitable opportunities created, to energy cost savings through material reuse, the project has achieved a positive outcome in terms of sustainability. –Cristin Peacock
