2023 AIA Baltimore Student Awards presented by Future Architects Resources (FAR) Committee Call for Entries

AIA Baltimore (f.1871) connects you with more than 1,300 local members representing licensed architects, emerging professionals, students and allied partners. The AIA Baltimore Future Architects Resources (FAR) Committee created this scholarship program for students pursuing careers in architecture. Each year the winning projects demonstrate critical thinking, innovation, social responsibility and environmental stewardship. Submissions can be a single project, multiple projects or a research/theory paper (graduate students only).

Deadline: Submissions are due no later than Friday, July 28, 2023

Eligibility

  • Participation is open to all eligible students at no charge.
  • Entries are open to students entering/beginning the final year of their architectural studies program (community college/undergraduate/graduate school) in Maryland.
  • The work can be a studio project, a competition, a self-directed project, or a graduate research/theory paper.
  • The student must be the sole author of the work and it must have been realized exclusively in an academic setting.
  • Designs completed in a professional office are not eligible.
  • Students who submit to the FAR Awards are encouraged to also submit to student awards for AIA Maryland and AIA Chesapeake Bay.
  • Faculty sponsorship is required for all submissions

Award Categories

All forms and file uploads will be completed in the FAR Awards online submission portal. You may save your work as you go and return to the site as often as needed, but all work must be completed and submitted by the submission deadline - Friday, July 28, 2023.

Graduate Students

One award at $500 each

Undergraduate Students

One award at $400

Community College

One award at $300

Juror Citations

At the discretion of the jury, there will be up to six additional awards at $100 each.

Faculty Sponsorship

Faculty sponsorship is required for all submissions. The faculty sponsor will attest that the student has met all eligibility requirements.

Student submissions will be judged by a panel of Baltimore design professionals. All entries will be reviewed for their design excellence and for the success with which the project has met its individual requirements.

Winning Submissions

  • Award winners will be notified by email following the judging.
  • All applicants will be invited to the awards presentation.
  • Award winners will be recognized during the AIA Baltimore/ BAF Design Awards Ceremony, in printed materials and the AIA Baltimore website.

Winners will be required to design a presentation board. AIA Baltimore will cover the cost of printing. It is the entrant's responsibility to clear all drawings, photographs, and images included in the submission. AIA Baltimore will promote the winning projects on the AIA Baltimore Design Awards Gallery website and in the Annual Resource Guide. A press release will also be sent to the local media.

Project Guidelines (Community College, Undergraduate, Graduate)

  • A complete submission for each project includes the following:
  • Completion of the online Submission Form
  • Project PDF (10MB/11 pages max, for jury)
  • Presentation PDF (6MB/3 pages max, for public)

Project PDF – 10 MB/11 Pages Max, For Jury

Page 1: Project Description and Introduction

Conceal references to student’s name, sponsor’s name and accredited school on any part of the Project PDF. Identification of project authorship or school within the Project PDF will disqualify the submission

Project Information - On Each Page Include:

  • Project Name
  • Project Location
  • Project Category

Project Synopsis stating project description, requirements and design achievements. Do not include identifying information such as student or school name. The Jury will review these files.

Pages 2: Visuals

Entrants may include up to 10 pages of images, diagrams and annotations.

Entrants are encouraged to include any additional descriptive plans, sections, elevations and images of three-dimensional models to explain the design solution. The goal should be to help jurors understand the qualities of your project as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

Format:

8 1/2" x 11" landscape or portrait orientation
Combination of Text and Images; 12 pt. minimum font size.

Presentation PDF – 6 MB  3 pages Max, for publicity

Select three images or pages from your entry that you feel best represent your project. Selected images of all entries will be displayed during the Design Awards Ceremony.

Presentation Information - On Each Page Include:

  • Student(s) Name
  • School Name
  • Faculty Sponsor
  • Project Title
  • Other identifiers as desired

Format:

8 1/2" x 11" landscape or portrait orientation
Three pages maximum. Total size of PDF—all three pages combined—may not exceed 6MB of data for use in the presentation of awards and publications.

The Jury will not see these files. Provide image captions and credit for each image.
