SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
The clients approached us to renovate their outgrown one story brick rambler located within the tree lined suburban neighborhood of Takoma Park. Their challenge was to provide much needed additional space for their family within the constraints of a modest budget. By maintaining much of the existing structure and creating an addition which straddles over top, we were able to add space while limiting the amount of demolition.
The choice of basic materials, such as cement board panels, asphalt shingles, and by simply painting the existing brick, the desired modern transformation was achieved without high construction costs.Replacing the gabled roof form with a terrace creates an additional outdoor room and the detail of the cedar rail is carried onto the house to accent the main entry of the house and tie the design together. At the heart of the renovation is the new family room, created by combining the pre-existing kitchen with the footprint of the new addition. As a kitchen, dining, and sitting room, and connecting the interior to the wooded site, this space serves as the hub around which the house functions.
